Dan wrote the lyrics for this. The song is about an old schoolmate of his who was murdered on a trip home from college.
Dave came up with a neat chordal pattern that framed the atmosphere. The remainder of the arrangement was a group effort.
Dave and Joe each played about eleventy-billion guitars on this. Acoustics, electrics, 6, 12-string, what have you.
Live, this usually holds everyone rapt.
lyrics
.
Can you remember when you were young, and the teacher offered candy, and taught you to run
Can you still see yourself on the playground, where you ran with your friends, and where you could pretend
That life was forever, and that you'll rule the world
Did he reach for your open hand, when you were all alone on the open road
Were you on your way to everything, when he found you stranded in the middle of nowhere
Where silence fell forever, and he could rule your world
Chorus:
Oh why did he take you away from our lives
Oh why did he take you from this place
I wish he could see how we drown in the pool
Of the tears that are left in your space
Did you have a chance, to look him in the eye and ask him why
Did you have a chance, to look up one last time at the open sky
Where dreams are forever, and you can rule the world
Chorus
Can you see how we miss you, can you see how we're crying day and night
Can you send us a message, can you tell us everything's all right
Well life is forever, and you can rule the world
